Spiritual formation into Christ-likeness is a work that God initiates in us through the Holy Spirit. Our job is to cooperate with the Spirit’s work in that regard. One of the ways we do that is by engaging in various spiritual practices or “exercises” shown in Scripture and throughout history to create space for God to do His transforming work in forming us into the character of Christ. These exercises are not an end in themselves. They simply provide reliable means for the Spirit to transform us.
A person who is experiencing the reality of the Kingdom of God is learning to…
Trust God in Everything:
We are not overcome by life’s challenges because of growing confidence in God. John 6:28-40
Find their identity in Christ:
We live grounded in the truth of who we are to Him.
We are less attached to and influenced by false programs for happiness. Colossians 2:6-12
Obey easily and routinely:
Out of love for God and the genuine belief that His way is best, we follow and obey. John 15:1-17
Manifest the Fruit of the Spirit:
We are becoming more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. Galatians 5:22-26
Care for the Outcast:
We see ourselves in the marginalized. We cultivate mutual relationships based on love. Matthew 25:34-40
There is a healthy detachment from things and a growing desire to give away our money and other resources. Matthew 6:25-34
Engage in Mission:
We are available to God, and involved in His work, stewarding the finances, spiritual gifts, natural talents, and acquired skills He has given to us. Matthew 28:16-20
